I had a cool idea for a thread. Lets make a list of the top ten oldest jobs in the world. I will fill in the first two because most people know those, but after two I need everyone's help.
1. Prostitute
2. Politician.
I would like to say that if artist gets on this list, we have to include art critic. _________________ What a piece of work is man. So noble in thought and so infinite in wisdom. Yet man delights not me. |

I believe Teacher/Professor should be number 1. Who did the Prostitute learn about sex? And who taught him/her about money? Who instructed the Politician in the ways of government?
That's my point on that. Next, I think Priest/Shaman/Cleric should be up there somewhere. _________________ "Watch as blood flows through the skies. Watch as Hell swallows the Earth. Watch as your death rains from the rafters."

OK Mass, no silly stuff. Maybe I should clarify the question. By profession I mean the first thing people would do for money or personal benefit. Teacher would be very low on the list of oldest professions because most teaching was parent to child in the really early days. For another example, you could say person who is good at math could be in top ten. If you are good at something that other people find frustrating, you can charge to do it for them. I imagine there was one caveman who was better at counting the sheep in the herd then other cave men. The other cave men would pay him some food if he would count for them. This is more like what I was talking about.
Don't get me wrong Nera, teachers are very important. But it isn't a job that pays well and would have developed later.

So, my idea of Cleric/Priest/Shaman sounds good?
And back in the Greek times, people scrambled to see Socrates and Plato. In Ancient Egypt, the scribes taught the select few that were allowed to write how to write.
Or are you defining jobs as "You do this, you get that"? In that case, Politician wouldn't be there, and neither would prostitute, or "companions", as some prefer to be called. _________________ "Watch as blood flows through the skies. Yes , shaman/priest guy would definitely be on the top ten. But sorry, still no teacher. I realize plato and aristotle were teachers, but I am thinking farther back. Back before organized civilization like the greeks. Prostitute is first because what "Men" want most is basically sex. Women would have taken advantage of this early. Politician is second because I am thinking corrupt politician: the one who, under the pretense of common good or devine right, convinces others to do things for them. This is a natural inclination of man and would have manifested itself early in human history. Non-corrupt politicians would not be in the top ten, but I would like to think they wouldn't be that far off.

But if you just mean a profession that has been around since before civilization, then teacher would be there too. Regardless of any arguement I've heard so far, someone has always been designated to teach the young the ways of the people, even if it was just how to fight.
So there's my arguement for Teacher.
And don't threaten an Admin, even with Mod powers, lol. We can ban you! _________________ "Watch as blood flows through the skies. Watch as Hell swallows the Earth. Watch as your death rains from the rafters."

Nera does hold a good point. And think of it this way; even in cavemen times there was a primitive form of teacher. One caveman would do something, discover that it was good/bad, show the other cavemen, and they would all follow his/her example. Is that not teaching in it's most basic of forms, or am I just rambling?
Also, I think that hunter/farmer should be on there. _________________ Where is your God now? Look around you, He has forsaken you, it is plain to see. Now what will you do? Will you fight? You will lose. There is nothing you can do but bow down to me. |

We're judging from evidence that show us there is, I assume.
And besides... Maybe Adam and Eve where cavemen... or cave-man-and-woman... That has a funky ring to it. _________________ "Watch as blood flows through the skies. Watch as Hell swallows the Earth. Watch as your death rains from the rafters."
